TODAY YOU'LL FIND ME . . .

Over on One Wed Blog talking all about The Fall 2013 Bridal Market in NYC.  This is one of my favorite times of year (April Market is the other) when all the top designers show off their lines. For me Fall 2013  is different in the sense we're seeing two juxtaposed ideas happening in bridal wear--the return to and breaking away from tradition: READ MORE . . .

REAL DEAL VINTAGE

So what, you ask, is the difference between The Real Deal vintage and vintage reproduction?  If the above dress still existed somewhere, say in your Grandma's attic, that's the real deal.  If you're considering going vintage--I mean really vintage as in wearing a dress from the actual era you love, here's the lowdown: Many vintage clothing stores stock actual gowns from by-gone eras as well as ‘retro-inspired’ selections.that are brand new. The bride in love with a particular era of clothing usually checks vintage clothing stores first. Not all brides opt for an actual gown that survived her favorite era though. Some choose a newer style reflecting the period in natural fibers. Why? Because that authentic 1925 chemise may be so delicate, without proper restoration it could literally fall apart. Think of gowns belonging to the ages like you would certain antiques: some so precious to be considered museum quality. Depending on restoration, the rule of thumb is, the older the gown the less they should be worn. So if perchance you're all set on wearing that 1925 chemise with a cloche hat  find a specialist in restoration who can advise.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Just a pointer here for finishing off your bridal look with belts and sashes: the simpler the gown, the more ornate the belt can be.  These floral sashes are works of art by indie designers and could jazz up the look on most gowns.   I'm loving the feathered looks here . . . so ultra-sophisticate and Boho all at once . . .

WHAT'S THE WORST CURE EVER FOR INSOMNIA?

On those nights I'm plagued by insomnia I plug in the Netflix and find some interesting flick that eventually lulls me to sleep.  Last night was the exception.  Charlotte Bronte's latest Jane Eyre is too luscious a masterpiece to sleep through. Every decade it seems more versions of this ultimate in romance are produced--I counted twelve Jane Eyre remakes since 1930. The latest with MiaWasikowska and Michael Fassbender, will not only keep you up, it'll leave you totally inspired. To get to the really good stuff in the main storyline you do need to plow though the maze of Jane's abusive and lonely childhood. Eventually she meets the quintessential Gothic novel hero in the brooding Edward Rochester when she becomes his ward's governess. And of course other stuff is happening through this intricately woven story of layered emotions.  For depth, few love stories are this all encompassing.  That's why the bridal gown in this particular production of Jane Eyre by Michael O'Connor was a real treat. For me it was symbolic and as pure as the moral fiber that stitched this character together scene by scene. From her veil embroidered with tiny florals attached to a bonnet, to the silk ruffled taffeta dress, everything about Jane Eyre as a bride really got to me. A real must see for not only die-hard romantics but even the most practical of women fall in love with Jane's strength. Don't miss the scene where Mia Wasikowska removes her bridal gown from the box as if it's the most precious gift in the world . . .
You can actually catch glimpse of the dress below in this trailer here

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING

 Catherine Alhinc
Some brides are moving into and combining two very important transitions in life, wife and mother all at once. If perchance you are or will be a bride expecting, brace yourself--there are some absolutely gorgeous gowns out there. You'll be impressed to find slick, editorials like these of Mom-to-Be /Brides holding full, rounded tummies. Designers are finally heeding the call for trendy bridal gowns ranging from the most traditional to total ‘edge’.

Maternity dresses are designed with a growing tummy in mind and are cut several inches longer in front.  That means all those great little empires and tents coming off the runway lately won't really work unless you'll be less than five months along in your pregnancy.

THE BRIDE ON A SCOOTER

This city-chic styled shoot is the brainchild of the husband and wife team of Nina Duong and Adam Kaminski.  He's a Toronto photographer and she's a wedding gown designer.  Twelve years ago they opened Nina Duong  Haute Couture when two years later Adam began to realize, "As a guy I'd struggled with getting a handle on fashion. At the same time we'd been hiring photographers to shoot Nina's collections. Having
spent time and money on commercial fashion shoots not once were we
happy with the pictures. This led to the decision for me to learn
photography so we can communicate our message and I can make
myself useful. The rest as they say is history. . . .
The actual idea for the shoot came from my visit to Asia last
Christmas. As you know the streets there are filled with scooters and
bicycles. It makes you realize that the modern urban bride would find
a perfect fit on a scooter."
What I'm particularly loving is how the blacks and whites of the dress and tux blend in with the gray and beige streetscapes of this shoot.  Kudos to both the photographer and Nina whose designs fit so beautifully against the Toronto backdrop . . .
